The Burntwood Round (V.I. International)

The Grand National Archery Society have accepted a specific round which will enable more visually impaired archers to participate in the sport.  The round, a Burntwood round has been on trial and accepted at mainstream competitions.

We do not wish this round to be known as a VI round, as it is a round in which any archer can participate. Archers who are juniors, beginners or those who do not wish to compete at longer distances can benefit by entering the Burntwood rounds.

As vision impaired archers wished to attend more mainstream competitions, the need for this specific round was recognized and developed by our development team.  The lack of vision causes alignment and balance difficulties, therefore a great problem with body sways. At the shorter distance there is a reduced probability of a vision-impaired archer missing the boss. At a distance of 60 yards, a V.I. archer may miss the boss with four of six arrows.  With the boss set permanently at 30 metres, a V.I. archer may miss the smaller target faces, but hit the boss with all of the arrows.

The round is easily integrated into most competitions/tournaments without causing any difficulty. For international competitions this round will be called the V.I. International round.

All rounds preceded with Burntwood would mean the target set at 30 metres, numbers of arrows shot at each distance would be the same as the competition round including scoring. Numbers of distance changes would be simulated by the change of face size e.g.

A Burntwood 1 (York),

Target set at 30 metres  5 zone scoring

first distance, 72 arrows shot at a 60 cm face

second distance, 48 arrows shot at an 80 cm face

third distance, 24 arrows shot at a 122 cm face.

A V.I.I.R.1 (FITA) ,

target set at 30 metres 10 zone scoring

First distance, 36 arrows shot at a 40cm face

Second distance, 36 arrows shot at a 60cm face

Third distance, 36 arrows shot at an 80cm face

Final distance, 36 arrows shot at a 122cm face

All other recognized rounds would be shot on the same principals.

Burntwood Rounds Simplified.

There is no difference in distance shot by male and female V.I. archers, as in York/ Hereford rounds for instance.

Target / boss is always placed at 30m for seniors and 15m for juniors.  The numbers of arrows shot at each distance will remain the same as the alternative recognized rounds.
